From November through March, nearly all fresh strawberries, raspberries and blackberries are imported, and the tariff shows up on the clamshell. A 1 lb fresh strawberry pack at $4.99 in January competes with a 3 lb bag of frozen domestic berries at $7 to $8, which is less than half the price per pound. The swap that works

Frozen domestic berries (same nutrition, about half the price), fresh berries only in US season. Frozen berries are picked ripe and flash-frozen, so for smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt and baking they are the better ingredient. Buy fresh in May and June when local berries hit $1.99 a pound, and freeze a few pounds yourself.

Stockpile note: Fresh: days. Frozen: 12 months. This item qualifies for a 60-90 day stockpile bought at sale price.
